Q: is there a replacement for intal inhaler?
i have regualar asthma i am on qvar, singular maxair. i used to be on intal and maxairs 2 puffs each for sports intal apparently doesnt exsict anymore and maxair alone does absolutly nothing the doctor said theres nothing to do and i suffer at practice and my coach yells at me to get back in the pool. is there anything i could possibly do, im 13 and its getting so bad i want to quit though im good. ireally dont want to but i need something please help im suffering!?!

A: Hi This may be of help. I used intal for years. The suppliers/manufacturers of intal stopped supplying to the UK a couple of years ago and I hounded my Dr for mounths as it was a rare med with no steroid in. (Although I am a (55yrs) and intal was primarily a med for the young, it worked for me) The outcome was that intal is still supplied to parts of Europe but is no longer on the UK medical lists and highly unlikley to be reinstated. I still want to know why it was removed? I have not felt as well as I did on intal.
For your swimming, check with your Dr first, but as a past national swimmer (Yrs ago) try not having any dairy foods in a 6hr period before training, no junk foods but small pasta dishes or low GI foods prior to training. Lots of high enery but not high sugar. Do loads of beep breathing and be sure you take your ventalin or what ever you are prescribed on days you swim. Ask your Dr about SMART. a system used in the UK. Hope that helps

Q: Effectiveness of Intal (cromolyn sodium) used in a nebulizer?
I cannot get Intal inhalers and most of the international on line pharmacies have discontinued Intal inhalers. I did find that my pharmacy carries Intal (Cromolyn sodium) solution for nebulizers and they are covered by my health plan. I do not know how effective this delivery system is, but I am willing to find out. Does anyone else know about the effectiveness of this delivery system? It is inconvenient, but I am willing to try it.

A: Nebulizers are one of the most thorough delivery systems of medication targeted directly to the tissues in the lung. They exceed inhalers because the nebulizer provides for a more sustained, fine particle mist over numerous breaths. While less ‘efficient’ in medicine use, it is more effective. You can also inhale or exhale through your nose to get the medication into the mucosal membranes in the sinus. Allergy-induced post-nasal drip is associated with more pronounced asthmatic response.

Not many people still use cromolyn solution, primarily because it is most effective when administered 30 minutes prior to anticipated allergen exposure. It help reduce/eliminate degranulation of the histones and release of histamine from the mast cells. It’s good stuff, and I have used the Intal inhaler in the past.

Q: Why are all drug stores out of INTAL INHALERS?

A: I have read your question very carefully and I felt the frustration of not being able to ask you a few probing questions before answering. However, I would at the very least like to email you a few things to consider that will at least offer a few things to consider and may offer additional aspect for your consideration…with your permission first!

Q: i have allergic asthma,if i got a cat and used ~~~,?
my intal inhler to prevent an attack of asthma, before i got the cat say an hour before i was exposed, could i live with a cat and use that inhaler every 4 hours?
whenever i visit my sisterin laws house,i use muy inta inhaler to prevent an asthma attack,a few times ive forotten to spray and nothing happened.do you think its possible i could get away with it?

A: Yikes! Sounds like you may have allergic asthma – asthma due to cats. Using your intal every 4 hours will cover up the symptoms but won’t treat the asthma, which long term can damage your lungs. You should get evaluated by a board certified allergist. Allergy shots can be very helpful for this.

Q: BAD sports induced asthma. help!!?
yesterday i had a track meet and i ran 800m twice. the first time i started getting short of breathe on the last 200 meters and after i was done i got really dizzy and everything started going black. one of the officials had to hold me up and after a couple minutes i could breathe again.

the second time, i started wheezing after the first 400 meters and i couldnt see straight at all, i even ran off the track one time. i was coughing and wheezing, and then fell over at the end of the race.

it was really scary, and i dont want it to happen again. i am on Singulair and Zyrtec each once a day. I’m on Intal: 2 inhalations four times a day. And I use Proventil/ Zyrtec before exercise. Also on Advair twice a day.

Neither Proventil or Zyrtec have worked as a “rescue” inhaler.

I need help, but my doctor hasn’t really been helping.

I also have allergies.

PLEASE HELP! .. im not quitting sports though. definetly not.
sorry .. i meant proventil & xopenex as my rescue inhalers

A: ALBUTEROL and PROVENTIL ARE THE SAME THING!!!!!!!!! Albuterol is the generic name and Proventil is the brand name. Albuterol is also manufactured under the name Ventolin. Intal IS COMMONLY USED TO TREAT ASTHMA!! It is a mast cell stabilizer that works to impair the inflammatory process from ever beginning by preventing the rupture of mast cells(which cause an asthma attack). It is classified as an anti-asthmatic and is for long term management of asthma, not quick relief. If the albuterol is not working sufficiently ask your doctor if you are on the highest dose. Also ask about Levalbuterol(xopenex), it is a more potent dilator than albuterol, and has a longer duration. Remember that it takes 15 minutes for these drugs to start working, and 30-60 minutes for it to reach it’s PEAK effect, so don’t take it 5 minutes before a race and expect it to work because it won’t! It’s best to take it 30-45 minutes before you are going to be active. It really bugs me when someone asks a serious question about their health and they get incorrect answers from people that think that just because they are in the medical profession they know everything!!! PLEASE research everything I have posted by typing in “what is proventil” on your search line and you will see that it is the same exact drug as albuterol, and do the same with “what is intal. Good luck, and don’t ever take what your doctor(or anyone else) tells you at face value. Ask questions and do research!!!

Q: asthma attack & blackout?

I need help, but my doctor hasn’t really been helping because I also had attacks last week and the new medicine he put me on hasn’t helped.

PLEASE HELP!
sorry .. but there is no way i can quit sports.

A: I have restrictive lung disease. My lungs work only 17% out of 100%. I went to a program at the hospital to exercise and build up my lungs and breathing ability. It is cardiopulminary exercises. You could ask your Dr. about that. You might want to ask your Dr. about an inhaled steroid like flovent. It is a preventive, not rescue type. I think you need to learn how to breath during running. You may not be breathing properly and not oxygenating enough and therefore getting dizzy. You should have some supplimental oxygen at the track for when the dizzyness happens. Take care.
