Q: what’s the difference between olmesartan and valsartan?

A: Olmesartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Olmesartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly.
Valsartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. It is also used to treat heart failure in people who cannot take angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Valsartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly.

Q: What specific birth defects can be caused by Valsartan (Diovan)?
The package insert says it can cause birth defects but doesn’t say what kind of defects. Does it cause heart problems? Does it cause something less severe? What medication can replace it if a wonam wants to have a child?

A: “There have been cases of reported oligohydramnios, fetal growth retardation, pulmonary hypoplasia, limb contractures, and calvarial hypoplasia in various combinations in association with maternal losartan, candesartan, valsartan, or telmisartan (all ARBs) treatment during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Stillbirth or neonatal death is frequent in these reports, and surviving infants may exhibit renal damage. These effects are probably related to extreme sensitivity of the fetus to the hypotensive action of these drugs.”

There are other anti-hypertensive agents that are commonly used during pregnancy. Hydralazine is a common one.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Q: Can valsartan diovan & stamilo be taken together?
I need someone who is well-versed in medications to answer this question. Thanks in advance.

A: You should not be combining medications by yourself.

Diovan is the trade name of Valsartan.

It should be Stamlo and not stamilo. Stamlo is amlodipine.

Both are medications for high blood pressure, though there are some other uses as well.

Q: Can valsartan be administered together with hydrochlorothiazide?

A: yes they can be. I have given them many times together. Just make sure your blood pressure does not go to low. You can go to a pharmacy and many of them have the free blood pressure check machines

Q: Has anyone suffered from strange side effects after taking (Diovan) Valsartan for HBP. ?
I’m keen to know please and would thank you kindly for your time.
Dee you don’t get any tingling hands fingers or toes with this drug then?

A: Nope – I have not had any side effects and have been taking this drug for 5 years.I take it with bendroflumethiazide to prevent fluid build up.

I have to have regular blood tests and checks on my kidney and liver functions but so far all is ok.

Took Atenalol before this for a while then became asthmatic due to an allergy to it.

Q: Are there any contra indications taking St Johns wort with Valsartan, Felodopine, and Bendroflurozide.?
Im away from home at present so unable to ask my Doc. The above meds are a Angiotensin II receptor blocker, a calcium channel blocker and a thiazide diuretic taken for hypertension. Can i take St johns with them??
If not what is the most effective herbal/plant derived Anti Depressant.

A: St Johns Wort can only really be used for mild to moderate depression. It was not found helpful for severe depression.

As with other antidepressants, St John’s Wort may take two to four weeks to begin to take effect.
There are no listed contraindications for St John’s Wort (situations when it should not be used). It should be used with caution during pregnancy and while breast-feeding because there is no information on its safety in these conditions. Patients with a diagnosis of manic depression should use it with caution, since, as with all antidepressants, its use is associated with ‘switching’, or moving rapidly from a low to a high mood.
St John’s wort has significant interactions with a large number of prescribed medicines which are in common use, in addition to those mentioned below. These are listed in the British National Formulary (BNF). People who are taking any other medicine should always seek professional advice from a doctor or a pharmacist before combining it with St John’s Wort. If you are away from your doctor then maybe phoning the surgery and asking the receptionist to have a word on your behalf and arrange a later time to find out whether it is suitable or not. Another suggestion is to call into a pharmacy and asking the pharmacist or phoning the NHS helpline or going on to their website.

You should not take St John’s Wort at the same time as SSRI or MAOI antidepressants. (It has been made a prescription-only drug in the Irish Republic because of anxieties about its possible similarity to MAOI antidepressants.)

St John’s Wort may prolong the effects of some sleeping pills and anaesthetics. If you are to receive an anaesthetic you should tell the anaesthetist if you are taking St John’s Wort.

It also reduces blood levels of oral contraceptives , increasing the risk of pregnancy and breakthrough bleeding.
The most commonly reported side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms (such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea), allergic reactions, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, and dry mouth in a small percentage of patients. Another rare side effect is photo-sensitisation – increased sensitivity to sunlight. This is associated with high doses, but people taking it should increase their sun protection and avoid strong sunlight.
Hope this helps.

Q: Is Diovan (valsartan) a substitute for Altace?

A: Diovan (valsartan) belongs to a family of medications known as angiotensin II receptor blockers. These medicines are used to lower mild to moderate hypertension (high blood pressure). They work by relaxing blood vessels. Angiotensin II is a chemical that the body releases to cause the constriction of blood vessels. Valsartan blocks the action of angiotensin II, resulting in the relaxation of the blood vessels. This relaxation causes the blood pressure to drop. The full effects of valsartan are usually seen within about four weeks. Valsartan may be used alone or in combination with a diuretic (water pill).

Altace is indicated in patients 55 years or older at high risk of developing a major cardiovascular event because of a history of coronary artery disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, or diabetes that is accompanied by at least one other cardiovascular risk factor (hypertension, elevated total cholesterol levels, low HDL levels, cigarette smoking, or documented microalbuminuria), to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes. Altace can be used in addition to other needed treatment (such as antihypertensive, antiplatelet or lipid-lowering therapy).

Diovan (valsartan) is not a substitute for Altace. You should contact your doctor for more information.

Q: I get a stinging pain on the outside of one knee when I kneel and when I bend also a numbness in the skin?
There is no swelling, when pressed, the area sometimes hurts . I do not do any sports only gardening. I have some presumed rhumatism in my thumb joints. I am 65 and otherwise healthy. I am on Thyroxin and Valsartan. The condition occured about a year ago for a short time then disappeared. When accidentally knocked the pain was severe for a time.

A: Use the MERCK MANUALS link at the source below…to find the answer.

Q: Have Cough on Valsartan – Amlodopine Versus Valsartan?
Was originally on Lisinopril; gave me a scratchy cough. Moved to Valsartan and, although the cough didn’t get much better, didn’t report it because I’d read about Valsartan being so good. 5 years later, and have had the cough for that long. Finally, after having a very bad cold with the “scratchiness” turning into wheezing breathing difficulties, went to see the doc. and he has suggested I change to Amlodopine for a month only.

Doc also suggested I may have a post-nasal drip, since I always have a stuffy nose (which I’ve had since early childhood) and live in dread of getting a cold, since my sinuses always get infected and I know it will go on for weeks (also since childhood).

Is Amlodopine less effective than Valsartan? Why else would my GP suggest only a month’s trial?

A: sorry I don’t know any of these medications but I can recommend wearing a woolly hat to bed (and around the house) and tea with honey, my daughter gets nasal with colds too

Q: give me drug profile of valsartan including it’s dose per daily, solubility, therapeutic uses, side effects?

A: Try a little politeness when you ask questions;

Q: is valsartan a beta blockers?

A: Valsartan comes under the auspices of an angiotensin II inhibitor or angiotension II receptor antagonist. As already pointed out, it is for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).

See the links below for further information.

Q: Is Valsartan (generic form of Diovan) available in U.S.? If so, which pharmacy can i get it from? Thanks!?

A: Diovan (valsartan) is a prescription medication in the U.S. You would have to have a prescription for the medication from a physician, and after that, it is available at any U.S. pharmacy.

Again, it isnt available without a prescription though, and you’d have to visit a doctor first.

Q: What is the best Blood Pressure Medication.?
What is the best blood pressure medication with the least side effects ? I have tried Linsinopril, Diovan (valsartan),
Atenolol, Altace. They all bring my blood pressure down some, except for Diovan. It doesnt. The rest have similar side effects. Dizziness, incoherent, lack of energy.
Thank you for your response. I am at risk of a stroke each day.

A: Unfortunately, all those side effects are very common with most BP medicines. If your BP is at stroke level, the simple fact that the medicine is working causes the dizziness. A sudden drop in your BP to normal levels causes all those side effects. They will get better as your body adjusts to a lower BP. It may take as long as 2 weeks for this to happen though. You might try a very low dose of 1 of those that worked & wait a week or so to slowly increase the dose. That way your body can slowly adjust to gradual decreases in your BP.
From a previous answer, Vasotec is in the same family as Altace & lisinopril so it may have the same side effects. It is a good inexpensive choice. The others you have taken are all good 1st line choices. They actually have some of the better side effect profiles compared with other BP medicines.
Good luck.

Q: I am hypothyroid my recent BP is 90/105. why Diastolic is high and Systolic is low?
I am hypothyroid my recent BP is 90/105. why Diastolic is high and Systolic is low? taking medicine of Calcium channel blocker Exforge amlodipine besytate / valsartan 5mg/80mg 1 per / day. also taking multivitamin and enough magnesium 350mg.

A: BP is checked either by a person using a BP apparatus and stethoscope or by an electronic machine. When doctor is checking by a stethoscope the first sound he hears is systolic and the disappearance of the sound is diastolic. Even the machine is doing the same. The first appearance of the sound is systolic and the disappearance is diastolic.
So systolic will be always higher than diastolic. If you have checked with an electronic machine, the higher value should be systolic and the lower one diastolic. If it is showing specifically Systolic as 90 and Diastolic as 105, then there is something wrong with the machine.
Have your BP checked by a nurse or a doctor manually.

Q: I have a really painfull right hip. Pain is worse on external rotation.?
Any ideas. btw its been like it for 5 days now. No accident or injury involved.
I wondered if any of my meds produce joint pain.
Valsartan, felodopine, bendroflurozide.

A: Possible. I started having bad hip pain when I began martial arts. I don’t know if I turned the wrong way or my body was rebelling. Anyhow it hurt for like 3 years. I had a friend suggest I start taking gelatin. I took two in the morning and two at lunch for about two months. Pain went away. Now I just take two in the morning.
