Q: I recently got “tail end” of news about dangers of taking Ezetimibe. What is the scoop on this?
Zetia is commercial name of ezetimibe.
A: one study showed a possible link to cancer. Keep in mind that it is just one study and more is needed.
Personally I won’t prescribe it until they have some evidence of clinical benefit. currently there is none, all they have shown is they are able to lower the LDL number, but have not shown any reduction in morbidity and mortality.
Q: How does ezetimibe (Zetia/Ezetrol) increase HDL-C?
Ezetemibe, which is a cholesterol lowering medication, and is marketed with the brand names of Zetia or Ezetrol, lowers blood cholesterol by inhibiting its intestinal absorption by acting on Niemann-Pick C1Like1 (NPC1L1) in the intestinal brush border. Ezetimibe causes a decrease in LDL-C.
I want to know, that how does Ezetimibe result in an “increase” in the HDL cholesterol (HDL-C)?
A: Unlikely
Q: What is the effects of this medicine(sindasdat/ezetimibe?
A: Ezetim is a lipid lowering compound that prevents the intestine from absorbing cholesterol.
Side effects are very rare and include:
fatigue
diarrhea
abdominal pain
pharyngitis (sore throat)
coughing
back pain
joint pain
Q: I want literature review about drugs ezetimibe/Simvastatin. Can U plz tell me the link of websites.?
A: Ezetimibe/simvastatin (pronounced /ɛˌzɛtɨmɪb ˌsɪmvəˈstætɨn/) is a drug combination used for the treatment of dyslipidemia. It is a combination of ezetimibe (best known as Zetia in the United States and Ezetrol elsewhere) and the statin drug simvastatin (best known as Zocor in the U.S.). The combination preparation is marketed by Merck & Co./Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals (joint venture) under the trade names Vytorin and Inegy.
Ezetimibe reduces blood cholesterol by inhibiting absorption of cholesterol by the small intestine by acting at the brush border of the small intestine and inhibits the absorption of cholesterol, leading to a decrease in the delivery of intestinal cholesterol to the liver.
Simvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor or statin. It works by blocking an enzyme that is necessary for the body to make choleste

Q: I want to know about ezetimibe(a new drug for hyperlipidemy)?
A: Ezetimibe reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the body. Ezetimibe is used to reduce the amount of total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in the blood. Ezetimibe is used with a low cholesterol diet and, in some cases, other cholesterol lowering medications. Reported side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and tiredness. Ezetimibe is available with a prescription under the brand name Zetia. Other brand or generic formulations may also be available. It is available in a 10 mg tablet.
You can read more about it here

Q: I am taking Statin/Ezetimibe 10mg for lowering LDL. However my latest SGPT reading shows 73. Is this OK?
My SGOT is 32 and Serum Biluribin is 0.7.
A: Ezetimibe is used together with lifestyle changes (diet, weight-loss, exercise) to reduce the amount of cholesterol (a fat-like substance) and other fatty substances in the blood. It may be used alone or in combination with an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin). Ezetimibe is in a class of medications called cholesterol-lowering medications. It works by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.
Buildup of cholesterol and fats along the walls of the blood vessels (a process known as atherosclerosis) decreases blood flow, which decreases the oxygen supply to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body. Lowering blood levels of cholesterol and fats may help reduce this buildup and may decrease your chances of developing heart conditions such as angina (chest pain), strokes, and heart attacks. Results of a clinical study that compared people who took ezetimibe and simvastatin with people who took simvastatin alone found that although the group of people taking ezetimibe and simvastatin had lower amounts of cholesterol in the blood, there was no difference between the two groups in the amount of cholesterol and fat buildup on the insides of the blood vessels in the neck. It is not currently understood why the additional lowering of cholesterol levels in the blood did not lead to a greater decrease in cholesterol and fat buildup along the walls of the blood vessels in people taking ezetimibe and simvastatin. Further studies are underway to compare treatment with ezetimibe and simvastatin to treatment with simvastatin alone to see if there is a difference in the risk of developing heart disease. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about the risks and benefits of treating increased amounts of cholesterol in your blood with ezetimibe and other medications.
In addition to taking a cholesterol-lowering medication, making certain changes in your daily habits can also lower your blood cholesterol levels. You should eat a diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol; exercise 30 minutes on most, if not all, days; and lose weight if you are overweight.
Common adverse drug reactions (≥1% of patients) associated with ezetimibe therapy include: headache and/or diarrhea. Infrequent adverse effects (0.1–1% of patients) include: myalgia and/or raised liver function test (ALT/AST) results. Rarely (< 0.1% of patients), hypersensitivity reactions (rash, angioedema) or myopathy may occur.
Consult the doctor.
Q: can i take ezetimibe and benzalip together?
A: That is an odd combination, ezetimibe was designed as an adjunct to statins or for those who either were unable to tolerate enough statin to result in sufficient fall in their cholesterol, or those who were unable to tolerate statins at all.
Ezetimbe and fenofibrate or gemfibrozil increase the risk of gallstones, Concomitant fenofibrate or gemfibrozil administration modestly increased total ezetimibe concentrations (approximately 1.5- and 1.7-fold respectively). Co-administration of ‘Ezetrol’ with other fibrates has not been studied.
There is thus currently no data on the combination of ezetimibe and bezafibrate (bezalip,) they should therefore not be prescribed together.

Currently Ezetimibe with attorvastatin is used to control LDL in particular and lipids in general. In my case, My Lp(a)is 55 while lipid range is normal. OATMEAL for breakfast everyday
These are all things you can do to help lower your cholesterol levels. Of course, you need to cut fat out of your diet. It is a lifestyle change. Good luck.
Q: Taking only Zetia (ezetimibe) still beneficial for cholesterol?
I have familial high cholesterol (genetic) and have been taking zetia (ezetimibe) for over a year now. I initially tried taking a statin but my body didn’t response well. I am a 20 yr old very active healthy individual – both physically and nutritionally (majoring in Nutrition). So far, my LDL has decreased slightly from taking Zetia.
However, with new the study regarding the ineffective use of Zetia are my results really even that significant (especially when having to pay such high prices)? Is Zetia even beneficial?
A: From my reading of the study, and reading the opinions of leading cardiologists, there is a real question as to the benefit of Zetia. There’s no question that it does lower cholesterol, but it failed to show a reduction in cardiovascular endpoints.
No matter how nice a drug sales rep is, I take everything they say about their product(s) with a large block of salt. Up until the FDA pulled Vioxx, sales reps were saying “It’s safe…”
Q: u.v analytical method for lovastatin, simvastatin,ezetimibe?

Q: High cholesterol – any natural foods to help lower count?
My doctor says I have high cholesterol levels (over 7 points) I was prescribed statins which totally disagreed with me , I had muscle pain in every place possible. So was told to discontinue treatment, I now am prescribed Ezetimibe 10mg bit nervous of side effects but would also like to try out natural food remedies any suggestions?
A: Pulses
Q: Is zetia the same as lipitor?
my girlfriends step father takes lipitor but one of his friends told him that Zetia (ezetimibe) is the same and can be used as a subtitue. is this true?
A: they are not the same drug,
but they can have a similar effect, both are used to treat high cholesterol/fat,
zetia is primarily used to target people who have high triglyceride counts, whereas lipitor is a statin drug that targets LDL(bad ) cholesterol
he should ask his doctor if he can switch drugs. idk his lipid profile so i can’t say what he needs to take to lower his risk of having a heart attack(which is the reason he is on lipitor presumably)
Q: When to stop taking cholesterol meds?
Hi, I’ve been taking cholesterol medicine for the last 4 years, first it was an ezetimibe-simvastatin formula and for the last year the Dr changed it to a fenofibrate-zsimvastatin formula and things are good, my question is how long should I stop taking it if I want to get pregnant? and what can I do to prevent during pregnancy? I’m out of the country and I can’t visit my Dr right now that is why I’m asking you guys, I hope you can help me, but I do plan to visit him as soon as I can once I’m back home (about a month from now but I will leave the country once more)
I’m more focus on how many days should I have without having taken any cholesterol meds at all more than food control, I’ve read a lot about that and I just want my body to be sort of meds free whenever it is we start trying to conceive.
Jan I don’t really understand what you mean about CAD and why would you say I’m being taken advantage of?
Saturated fat and cholesterol do NOT cause CAD and NEVER did.
A: You are being taken advantage of. I would become irate with your doctor. Look into the cholesterol con. Anthony Colpo and Dr. Uffe Ravnskov have VERY detailed articles.
Saturated fat and cholesterol do NOT cause CAD and NEVER did.
Please look into this.
Q: my dad is DM II patient. His last HbAic is 6.4% but the micral test is 195 mg/dl.pls suggests on what to do..
he is currently on Losartan, mixed insulin and ezetimibe…what do we need to do to make it normal…pls pls help!
A: Your dad HbA1C is 6.4 % , For a better diabetic control it should be less than 6 Micral test strips are used for urine test. Blood tests are more reliable.
Its better that you father checks his fasting and random blood glucose or goes for OGTT which will give the clear idea of his sugar levels diabetics cant only rely on the HbA1C tests only.
He should eat low carbo high fiber diet , low glycemic index diet, and exercise/ brisk walk. I f he is overweight , shedding some pounds will help a lot in controlling his blood glucose
